…you don’t LET her?

That was my response upon reading this:

One local police chief went against the grain of his fellow panel members and said

“you have to remember that this is a law enforcement matter and it is for the Police to respond to. I know you all want to carry a gun, but let me say this as a Chief of Police I don’t even let my wife carry pepper spray nor do my teenage children…”

Doesn’t LET his wife? Oh, no. No, no, no. Goodness, how could any woman put up with such lilliputian control-freakery? I shudder to see what else he doesn’t LET her do. I told Sabra upon reading that, that there was nothing I would ever not LET her do. In fact, even though I would always ultimately leave the decision up to her, if it came down to it I would almost insist that she carry to protect herself. I honestly thought we had moved beyond the relationship in which the man was the boss of the woman. How disgusting to find out that we haven’t — and that there are women out there who will still put up with that.

One Response to “…you don’t LET her?”

It must be nice in that delusional world where that Chief and his family live, where they’re safe “just because.” In this world, my ex F-i-L (city police) made sure his wife knew how to handle a firearm, because he acknowledged that he (and his fellow officers) couldn’t be there in time to protect his family from the bad people.

About the only thing he doesn’t let them do, is stay at home during a hurricane, because he’ll be on duty that whole time, and he doesn’t want to worry about their safety during the storm, so they head north to his parents’ place. Mind you, it didn’t do much good during Rita, when that damned storm came right up the Sabine River after us!

Every time I hear something like that, I get the feeling he’s the one they likely need protecting from. Classic controlling behavior, and when I see someone who wants to keep those he’s supposed to protect helpless, well…

When the Chief-in-Question made that statement alot of eyebrows went up. I had a very similar thought on the “Let” statement at the time as well, specifically what my Wife would have thought, followed by what she would have said. But then we have to remember that some women are just as happy being naïve about saving their own lives as are their spouses are.

Some people choose to live in willful stupidity and sometimes two willfully stupid people meet and marry.

I forgot to add in the post that this particular chief later stated “we have to remember that guns in the home stand a 90% chance of being used against the owner.”

To say the least everytime he opened his mouth it was like listening to a 1980s CBS special on guns. When he made the “90%” statement I thought wow even HCI only says 60%. How pathetic is it that a modern police chief not only adheres to a failed statistic, he feels further inclined to add an additional 30% to it.

Sadly the morning was a monumental waste of time and resources and was little more than a dog and pony show.

God help me, but I always forget about the willful stupidity angle…

Sounds like the B.S. I dealt with in trying to get a CLEO signature on a NFA form 1 recently.

I don’t understand how these folks remember how to breathe or reproduce.
One day I may have to get a job as either a Chief of Police, a weatherman, or a journalist. None of them are correct more than 10% of the time, and you really don’t have to know diddly shit to do their jobs.
