Way to support Texas music there, folks…

You might already know this, but I am an inveterate channel-surfer, even with the satellite radio. I left my iPod at home yesterday when I went to work and left the satellite radio at home with my wife, so I was left with terrestrial radio. So last night when I was driving home, I came upon Y100 playing Texas music just after 11. I remember hearing the Randy Rogers Band, Pat Green and Roger Creager. Good stuff, right? So I’m thinking, “Well, at least they play some Texas music, even if it is when everybody’s asleep.” Then I heard the deejay talking about the show…which he said was from 11 to 12 every Sunday night. Wow. One whole hour every week. Way to support the Texas-red dirt scene there, guys.

As if that wasn’t bad enough…apparently the program director or whoever programs the music for that show considers 1990s NASHVILLE also-rans Little Texas to be worthy of inclusion on it. You’d think they could and would do better to promote Texas-red dirt music here. I guess they think the Texas music would scare off the tourists, so they play it when the tourists are sleeping off their buzzes. Pardonnez mon francais, but that’s just fucking pathetic. (Yeah, Scott, I know I shouldn’t expect any better, but I still do…)

Hell, http://www.waco100.com/main.html WACO 100 plays their “Texas Saturday Night” from 7 to midnight, and you can even call or email in requests. I forget which Beaumont station it is that does their “Texas block” on Sunday night too, I think for a couple hours. Not very impressive, after listening to Texas Mix 105.3 out of Brenham (which I can start picking up around Conroe while driving on TX 105, and enjoy online http://www.texasmix1053.com/index.cfm” when not near there).

KILT in Houston used to have something exactly like that on Sunday nights (titled the Texas Roadhouse), but they cut it back to two hours on Saturday nights, and you call in your requests during the week and don’t even get to talk to a live person anymore from what I understand. I hated it too, because that was a great show. And I’d guess it was KYKR that does that Sunday night block, because (as far as I know) KAYD has Country Gold, the five-hour classic country show that Rowdy Yates from KILT took nationwide.

    LOL.

Everybody talks crap about Clear Channel, but they gave Texas Music a damn good shot here in Headbanger Land with 92.5. Too bad this town is utterly dis-interested in honky-tonk music.

You should check out KSYM / Third Coast show: http://www.alamo.edu/sac/ksym/index.htm

I remember hearing about that, yes. And I will give CC props when they do something right. I remember raving a couple of years ago about a really good classic country station they had in Little Rock that I discovered on one of my George Strait trips. Sucks that they couldn’t make inroads here, but I guess that’s what happens when you have two established country stations these days in a city this size.

We’ve had two country stations here that have done different Texas country programs over the last decade or so, always with great fanfare and no substance. I still remember the very first attempt, “Texas Country Nights”, every weeknight from five till nine. They’d play “Levelland,” “Road Goes on Forever,” and “My Hometown” every night, add some George Strait they were going to play anyway, and they maybe “If you’re gonna play in Texas” or something like that. Other than that it was no different than the rest of the day. I will have to give them credit though, without it I might not have bought my first REK cd. Plus, they gave Pat Green his first radio play, back when he was good.

Anyway, a year or so ago we got an actual good station, I like it every bit as much as 95.9 the ranch out of Fort Worth. http://www.truecountrylubbock.com/

Oooh, burn. Those were the days, weren’t they? I’ll have to check out that station when I get a decent Internet connection. 95.9 The Ranch is great, too.

And yet, Randy Rogers Band had their CD release party here last night, out at Cowboys. So you’re never going to convince me the market isn’t here. (Not to mention that, since I’ve started paying close attention, the Texas artists come here on a regular basis.)

I was a fill in a long time ago at KLBJ and I did my part for Texas Music by refusing to play Bob Schneider, because he sucks, always has, always will, and he’s an arrogant prick in person.
I’d play ZZ instead or sometimes Jackyl cos I like the chain saw solo, but at least I managed to keep Bob Schneider off the air part of the time in the central hills
