Surely this was not a surprise.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Debra J. Saunders, in today’s San Antonio Express-News:

…when U.S. attorneys in California send out dozens of letters threatening landowners and lien holders with the seizure of their property and assets, they’re not going after the drug trade. They are using the full force of the federal government to threaten people whose crime is renting….

This is true, but it’s just the nature of the way things work under the framework established by Richard Nixon lo those many years ago. If it’s going to be referred to as a war, by and large it’s going to be treated like one even by those who don’t have uniforms or guns. And you see that it HAS been treated like one, albeit one with SWAT teams instead of infantry divisions. No matter, though, for the results have killed people just as dead. The government has those tools, and by George they’re going to use them. I don’t know why anyone would be surprised by such. Remember the words of George Washngton:

“Government is not reason. It is not eloquence. Government is force; like fire it is a dangerous servant — and a fearful master.”

Are we being served? Or are we being mastered? Which way does government so often go? This sort of thing has happened before. We shouldn’t be surprised that it’s happening again.

Burn the government to the ground. Never, ever let another take root.
