Beating a dead horse? Maybe…

…but this is still worthy of a bit of commentary.

For those who do not want to click: After years of being ignored, Rush is on the ballot for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And no doubt a lot of people are thinking, Well, it’s about time.

And in a sense, they are right. In any Rock and Roll Hall of Fame worthy of the name, Rush would have been inducted long ago. And there’s the rub. With all of its dubious inductees over the years and passing over artists and bands who carried the rock’n’roll banner through the years and decades after its inception, the Hall under the “stewardship” of Jann Wenner and his gang has lost so much credibility that membership has absolutely no meaning anymore.

And the dubious inductions continue this year; if you click on that link you’ll see that among the other artists on the ballot are Chic and Donna Summer. Sure, I will stipulate that people like Mahalia Jackson and Bob Wills might have had some influence on the genre at its formation and thus might be worthy of induction, but what about all the legendary bands from the ’70s like Bad Company and Grand Funk Railroad who have yet to get in? And where do, say, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (or, for that matter, Chic or Donna Summer) get off being inducted? Where exactly was their influence on rock and roll?

More and more, I think the Gene Simmons solution is the only one that will work:

“We’ve been thinking about it and the answer is simply, ‘We’ll just buy it and fire everybody.'”

I don’t know what it says about me that at first I thought he said, “we’ll just buy it and set it on fire,” but there you go…

I don’t know what it says about me …

That says you heard KISS and immediately you thought FIRE and FLAMES and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that because THAT’S WHAT KISS IS, MAN!
