In which the AP plays right into our hands.

From yesterday’s Houston Chronicle:

Few presidents in modern times have been as interested in gun control as Richard Nixon, of all people. He proposed ridding the market of Saturday night specials, contemplated banning handguns altogether and refused to pander to gun owners by feigning interest in their weapons.

I am not sure why the AP felt the need to run a story like this, but at any rate it did bring a thought to mind:

Corrupt, paranoid, and secretive, Richard Nixon truly was the perfect representative of the victim-disarmament lobby.

Look at some of the unintended consequences of banning ‘Saturday Night Specials’ — whole neighborhoods were left defenseless and unable to fight back against drug dealers.

Muggings and armed robberies increased because shop owners and people couldn’t afford decent arms for self protection. The crack epidemic along with cocaine and other drugs are often blamed for the increase of inner city violence — but it didn’t happen in isolation.

As I am sure you know, no few gun control measures are classist and end up being racist because of it. Adding on an extra $100 for some sort of training class and another $50 for a permit to own would have most likely priced us right out of the gun we just bought, & it wasn’t that expensive.
