Another question.

I know some of you don’t agree with my support of gay marriage…

…but can we at least agree that comparing it to bestiality is not cool? I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Saying gay marriage is going to open the doors to people marrying and having relations with dogs, horses and such is basically saying gay people are on the same level as animals, or at least not on the same level as straight humans. Do you really mean to go there?

I think it is more along the line of the slippery slope concept. Right now, there are activists advocating legalized sex with children. There are societies existing now that allow that sort of thing.
Aside from that, many states criminalize sexual relations between cousins and non-blood related siblings. Is that allowable? There is a realistic fear that homosexual marriage will open all sorts of things up. Face it, today’s forbidden is tomorrow’s media advocated.

Actually, I would say provide some sort of government civil relationship, and move on, as they say. Homosexual activists won’t accept that because it is almost a religion now, but we have much more serious problems, and gay marriage is a red herring.

How are gay marriage and NAMBLA related? Because they are two illegal relationships? Because you disapprove of both? You’re the one putting them on the same slippery slope.

“Consenting adults” is a very clear definition and not particularly slippery. Including children or animals is nonsense. On the other hand, polygamy and incest do fall squarely inside the “consenting adults” line, but are still very much taboo. I’m not sure if they should be legalized. Probably should, along the lines of the “not hurting anyone” sentiment Pistolero says below, and we should just suck it up that freedom means people can do some weird stuff.

While I agree with your sentiment, I disagree with your reasoning.
I don’t think the people making the argument are saying gays are on the same level as animals.

I think the argument is that people will do deviant things; up to, including, and way beyond, sex with animals unless held firmly in check by laws.

I think that argument is wrong; people will do it regardless.
Les has some great points; many legal scholars are already pointing out that adult incestuous relationships will be another goal along with polygamy if/when gay marriage is approved.
Personally, I also think the government should get out of the marriage business. Define the tax breaks for those in a stable (actual or planned) relationship of 5+ years or more (pick a number over a year). The actual or planned would recognize the fact that contractual marriages will soon be happening and avoid the ‘hey we can get a discount on our insurance/taxes/rent” if we ‘get married’ for 3 months/1 year/etc

Civil unions would be fine if ALL references to marriage were replaced with civil union in ALL government paperwork. It’s the “separate but equal” thing that makes people object to it.

That’s actually a great point, one I never stopped to think about. It strikes me that the opponents of gay marriage are the more dangerous ones, though, as they’ve gone so far as to call for a constitutional convention over it. And you know that could never go well for us.

And you’re absolutely right, Bob. People are going to break the laws regardless, and if they’re only hurting themselves, what’s the problem?
